Good news. The next generation of leaders are different. At the end of a prestigious residential programme this week, my group of future leaders summed up by saying they wanted to see a more compassionate, inclusive kind of leadership in the world. Only in a kinder culture that nurtures diverse talent can they make the changes they seek to make.

They seek to make powerful changes. From the way that we provide compassionate healthcare to the way we overcome social exclusion to the way we rethink energy consumption. All these complex challenges need the contribution of many and varied talented people. Bringing talented people together as equals will be their job as collaborative leaders.

But you know, this also presented them with a conundrum. How were they to progress, to be seen and heard and to influence at the highest level, without being mistaken as ego-driven? This thoughtful group were sometimes ambivalent about whether they wanted to lead at all. Not for them were the ego battles and me-me-me profile-raising that career progression seems to demand. Which is exactly why we need them. Because its not about them, it’s about the change they seek to make.

So, for those of you who know you have something more to give, here are five quotes to inspire you to play bigger…

“There is only one you in all time. This expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it.” Martha Graham

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” Woodrow Wilson

“You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You just have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you.” Martha Graham

“As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same” Marianne Williamson

“Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself. It is precisely that simple, and it is also that difficult.” Warren Bennis

Which resonates for you?
